Editing and 3D incorporation in FCP
Once the media is ingested into FCP, the clips will appear below the project name in the left-most window (The Browser Window) and are then available to be altered. Further broad stroke editing* can then be done by dragging the clip of interest into the middle window (The Canvas Window). This window is of particular importance when dealing in 3D editing, as it is the stage of incorporation for the Dashwood Plug-in. When one of the eye streams in dragged into the Canvas Window, the user can then access the plug-in as a filter which is housed under the “video filters” command under the tools menu. When the plug-in is active, the user can select the output measures and display properties as well as augmenting the degree of convergence the material will present with. It is recommended that for these purposes, when marrying the footage, the left clip material is used and the “left eye + right image well = right eye” option is selected. At this point, the two streams are nested using the “nest” command to facilitate the synchronization of the two video streams.
Once the videos are nested together, the editing may progress as though only one stream is present. That said, quick keyboard shortcuts may be employed to select particular scenes of footage (Figure 1)
*Broad stroke editing can be loosely defined as coarse editing, involving the selection of large pieces of scenes or video footage being set together.
